Samui Island's lush embrace cradles the Banyan Food Market, a remarkable culinary and cultural haven beneath a centuries-old Banyan tree.
In this interview, we explore how Daria and Grigory have harnessed the tree's mystique, fusing gastronomy and artistry to shape an exquisite experience.
Mark (M): Daria, Grigory, a pleasure to be in your company. Could you briefly introduce yourselves and recount how your paths crossed? What sparked the idea of creating this unique establishment on Samui, and what is your vision for it as its founders?
Grigory (G): Hello! I think it's worth starting with the fact that Daria and I met while working in television. Since then, we became friends, and, later on, Daria also pursued a career as a TV host. Our friendship has lasted for over 20 years now.
Daria (D): I won't dwell on our shared past, as Grigory has already touched upon it. I would like to mention that at a certain point in our lives, circumstances led us in different directions. I moved to Thailand in 2011 and dedicated my time to raising children. However, even while living here, I always had a lingering idea of doing something meaningful, yet I couldn't quite pinpoint what it should be. In 2019, we returned to Russia, settling in St. Petersburg. After three years, we made the decision to return to Thailand, specifically to the island of Samui.
By that time, Grigory had also left Moscow and ended up in Phuket. I invited him to join me on Samui. I suggested that since we were both on the island, we should leverage our combined efforts and create something extraordinary.
Initially, the idea was to establish a family-oriented restaurant focusing on breakfasts and brunches. For two months, we scoured the entire island, searching for that elusive, exceptional spot.
We had specific requirements – we wanted a lush, green setting with a terrace where everyone could enjoy themselves Through some twist of fate, we repeatedly passed by this abandoned food court.
At the time, there were only a few folks making pizza there. They gave us the landlord's contact number. That's how we met him. We were quite anxious, fearing he would only lease us a single corner. We were prepared to work with that, but our ambitions were greater.
"I believe that what initially drew us in was the magnificent Banyan tree which possesses a strong and beautiful energy. Today, we observe how people come here, some find their place, while others don't. Some try their luck but can't establish a connection with us, so they move on.
However, for those embraced by the tree's energy, they remain with us, and harmonious collaboration continues. The same applies to our tenants – those whom the tree welcomes become part of our team. Can you feel the extraordinary energy here?"
